Manji 卍 (2023) – Storyline/Plot:

Sonoko Kakinouchi (Noriko Ohara), who runs a select shop, is looking for a woman to model the store’s clothes. Her husband Kotaro, a dentist, recommends Mitsuko (Manami Shindo), who works at her coffee shop, to Sonoko. Sonoko and Mitsuko gradually fall in love with each other, but one day Eiji, who claims to be Mitsuko’s lover, visits Sonoko’s shop and proposes to Sonoko that they share Mitsuko.

A bored housewife decides to take art classes to fill up her time. When one of her nude drawings bears a strong resemblance to another classmate, the rumor mill grinds out a story that the two are involved in a sapphic relationship. She decides to get better acquainted with this muse and that’s when things get more complicated. Things get way past platonic as they form an obsessive codependency. It’s interesting to see how Masumura treats an obviously taboo subject. The two clearly have romantic intentions for each other, but the film never directly addresses them as lesbians. In fact the film implies there is more shame around the infidelity caused for their male partners. There is naturally much more nuance in female relationships. They can be more open and intimate with each other. So it’s plausible something more can spring out if it when they’re already so intertwined.

The scene where the two get naked in front of each other is incredibly erotic. As the two are admiring each other’s curves and crevices, so too is the director. It may be a rather straightforward melodrama, but the twisty psychological mind games in the second half make this much more compelling.
